Is direct democracy in Poland a utopia or a real alternative to the current system?
In his book "Open System," Mirosław Matyja tackles a bold and timely topic: citizen-led governance of the state. He proposes a new systemic model, based on the proven mechanisms of direct democracy, in which it is not political elites but the sovereign—the public—who has the decisive say in public affairs.
The author uncompromisingly challenges the myth that Poles are unwilling to participate more in state decision-making. On the contrary, he argues that a system in which citizens become real participants in government is neither a revolution nor a pipe dream, but an evolutionary opportunity to rebuild trust and the effectiveness of public institutions.
Drawing on his Swiss experience and analyzing Polish political realities, the author proposes concrete solutions for implementing forms of direct democracy in our country. The book also includes a symbolic "reassurance" chapter – a vision of a future in which civic dialogue and co-decision-making have become the norm.
“Open System” is a manifesto of conscious citizenship, an invitation to debate and an impulse to action for all who believe that Poland can be a truly civic state.
